Picture a two person team pricing a two card box for a fine tune run.

The GPU line comes in where they expect.

The memory line does not.

TrendForce and Counterpoint Research published the reason this week.

Samsung, SK hynix and Micron moved capacity toward HBM, the stacked DRAM that AI accelerators consume, and general purpose DRAM ended up behind that queue.

CXMT, the Chinese supplier, runs 320,000 DRAM wafers a month and is expected to add more than 100,000 within a year, then reach 600,000 by the end of 2028, an 87.5 percent jump.

Apple is widely reported as trying to buy there as well, which says a lot about how tight the general market is.

The hard part is timing.

Capacity that arrives in 2027 and 2028 does not help a run that has to start this month.

Buying now means paying a premium for memory that may be too much or too little for the job by the time the shortage clears.

Splitting the two purchases is what makes it workable.

Run the workload on rented capacity first, measure what it really needs, then size the box to that answer instead of to a shortage.

RTX 3090 capacity runs at $0.15/hr, and Buy Now Pay Later means zero upfront with payment after one month.

You can validate the workload now and buy later with evidence.

When the last memory spike hit your build budget, did you delay the purchase or pay it?
