Brendon Ray Hedrick learned the specs of the cards he was selling on the same morning as everyone else.

He ran product at EVGA from 2016 to 2019.

Nvidia kept its announcements locked down, and partners found out about GTX and RTX at the public reveal.

Leaked retailer images were traced with colored dots so the source could be identified.

That was the easy part.

The hard part was the pricing.

EVGA had to keep a card on the shelf at Nvidia's advertised starting price even when it sold at a loss, because the alternative was risking its chip allocation.

Profit had to come from the expensive custom models.

Then Nvidia's own Founders Edition cards went after the same buyers, and spending more on circuitry and cooling bought smaller and smaller gaming gains.

By 2022, after price cuts, EVGA was losing hundreds of dollars on RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 cards.

It walked away from a business that was 78 percent of its sales.

The squeeze exists because the hardware has to be owned.

Someone else sets the price and the allocation, and the buyer carries the risk either way.

Hourly compute removes that exposure.

RTX 3090 capacity at $0.15/hr, cloud storage at $2.49/TB per month, and Buy Now Pay Later with zero upfront and payment after one month.

If you priced out a rig this year, what decided it for you: the lead time or the total on the quote?
