Bill Ackman put a number on Elon Musk's compute target this week: a trillion dollars of borrowed capital.

The scale explains the number.

SpaceX wants to close 2026 at 2.5 to 3 GW of compute, including 1.2 million NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs at Colossus 2, then add another 13 GW through 2027 for a total near 20 GW.

Musk supplied his own read on the financing.

Debt markets, he wrote, have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company without substantial revenue independent of AI data centers.

That sentence carried a cost.

Daytona.io cited the post while disclosing that a GPU provider tried to renegotiate a signed contract, and that the same provider's banks cut lending offers in half once the post went viral.

Read those two facts side by side and the split becomes visible.

Capital for a 20 GW build narrowed this week.

Compute for a team that needs to validate a model did not.

Renting 3090 time at $0.15/hr makes evaluation a line item someone can approve on a Friday.

Buy Now Pay Later keeps it at zero upfront, with the first payment due a month later.

A smaller setup you actually control beats a trillion dollar one you have to finance.
